Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Procopius

Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Procopius, Religious statue on Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic

Description

Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Procopius is a baroque statue on Charles Bridge showing two religious figures in a dramatic composition. The work depicts the saint blessing a sinner on one side while the other stands victorious above a devil, with symbolic figures completing the scene.

History

The statue was created in 1712 by sculptor Ferdinand Brokoff under the patronage of Count Romedius Josef František Thun. It was part of a larger program of baroque monuments that transformed Charles Bridge during the early 1700s.

Culture

The statue brings together a Spanish Dominican preacher and a Czech Benedictine monk, showing how religious traditions connected different parts of Europe. Visitors can see this cultural blending reflected in the way the two figures are portrayed as equals in their spiritual authority.

Practical

The monument stands on the south side of Charles Bridge, making it easy to locate as you cross the bridge. The detailed religious symbols and decorative elements are visible from several angles, so take time to walk around and observe from different viewpoints.

Did you know?

The pedestal features three supporting figures depicting a Turkish person, a Jewish person, and a devil, reflecting how medieval Europeans viewed the world around them. This detail shows how religious art of that era reflected the social attitudes of the time.
