Zikmundova vila, Villa in Zlín, Czech Republic

Zikmundova vila is a functionalist house at Žlebová 2894 in Zlín, built in 1934–1935 for district governor Josef Januštík. Its present form dates from a 1953–1954 adaptation by architect Zdeněk Plesník for traveller Miroslav Zikmund: the original corner bay was enlarged and a dining alcove with terrace added, using exposed concrete panels. Inside are a library, darkroom, study, three bedrooms and a home gym.

Baťa's support fund built the functionalist house in 1934–1935 for Josef Januštík, the first district governor of Zlín, who lived there with his wife Marie until 1953. The film director Elmar Klos, Marie's son from her first marriage, bought it in 1942 but never lived there. In 1953 he sold it to the traveller Miroslav Zikmund, who had it rebuilt by architect Zdeněk Plesník in 1953–1954.

The villa embodies the principles of functionalist design in how its rooms are arranged and furnished, with spaces made for simple daily living. Visitors can observe how every element was placed with purpose, reflecting the values of the era when form followed function.

The villa stands at Žlebová 2894 in the Zlín district of Žlebová, on a plot that includes a large garden. The house is a listed cultural monument and is cared for by the Nadační fond Zikmundova vila, founded in December 2020, whose aim is to restore it and open it to the public; access is therefore tied to the foundation's work rather than to regular opening hours.

The villa retains its complete original 1950s furniture set designed by Miroslav Navrátil, who used ski- and sled-making techniques to bend plywood. The interior features a retractable projection screen in the library, a double-sided map in the study, and a dumbwaiter for objects running from the upstairs bathroom through the kitchen to the basement. Such a complete set can no longer be seen in the homes of Jiří Hanzelka or Zdeněk Plesník.
