Dick Block, historic commercial building in New York, United States
The Dick Block is a three-story commercial building at Webster Street in North Tonawanda built in 1891 in the Romanesque Revival style, marked by rusticated stonework and decorative brick patterns. The structure shows classic features of this building period, including rounded windows and arches that give the building a solid, enduring appearance.
The building was constructed in 1891 during North Tonawanda's economic boom as a lumber port, when the city was expanding. Later, around 1946, the furniture store Witkop and Holmes Company took over the ground floor and shaped how the space was used.
The Dick Block contributes to the visual identity of the historic district, where brick walls and arched windows connect to the craftsmanship traditions of the late 1800s. The building reflects how commercial spaces functioned at that time, with ground-floor shops that served everyday needs of the neighborhood.
The building is located near other shops and art galleries in downtown North Tonawanda, making it easy to explore on foot. The facade and its details are clearly visible from the street, so visitors can view the architecture without special access requirements.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012, recognition that confirmed its architectural and historical importance to the region. This designation also helps protect its structure for future generations.
