Cedar Lake East Beach

Cedar Lake East Beach is a sandy shore on Cedar Lake in Minneapolis where visitors find drinking fountains, walking paths along the waterfront, and direct water access for swimming and recreation. The beach spans a natural shoreline that opens onto the lake with nearby green spaces for picnicking.

The beach grew from a railway-adjacent shoreline in the 1800s into a public recreation space through the construction of an earthen causeway that changed the waterfront. This development made it a key bathing destination for the city.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the beach became a meeting point for alternative communities and local artists, including the band Hüsker Dü.

The beach is open from 6 AM to 10 PM daily and is accessible by bus, bicycle, car, or on foot from surrounding neighborhoods. There is no lifeguard on duty, so swimmers should exercise caution and check water conditions before entering.

Local authorities monitor water quality weekly and post advisories when bacteria levels exceed state safety standards. These regular checks help visitors know when swimming conditions are safe.
