Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is an outdoor art space featuring more than 40 permanent installations set across expansive green grounds. The site combines landscaped gardens with contemporary sculptures that invite visitors to walk through and explore art in a natural setting.

The garden was established in 1988 as a collaboration between the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park Board to create a public art venue. The project grew from earlier community efforts to preserve green space and make contemporary art accessible to local residents.

The Spoonbridge and Cherry serves as a gathering point where the public engages with art in an open setting, making contemporary works part of everyday life. Visitors of all ages interact with these outdoor pieces, treating the space as both a gallery and a social meeting ground.

The garden is accessible daily and can be reached on foot or by bike, with pathways throughout and nearby parking available. Plan for a comfortable walk of at least an hour to see the grounds, and note that the terrain is relatively flat and easy to navigate.

Hidden beneath the grounds is an underground cistern system that collects rainwater and uses it to irrigate the entire garden space. This system demonstrates how the site operates sustainably while conserving municipal water resources.
