Northwestern National Life Insurance Company Home Office, Beaux-Arts office building in Loring Park, Minneapolis, US
The Northwestern National Life Insurance Company Home Office is a Beaux-Arts office building in Minneapolis's Loring Park neighborhood, faced in gray Bedford limestone with a Palladian loggia supported by Ionic columns. The former insurance headquarters was converted into a residential building with apartments in 2012.
The building was constructed between 1922 and 1924 as the new headquarters of the insurance company, following a period of difficulties for the business. Its completion was seen as a sign of recovery and confidence in the company's future.
The building shows the grand design preferences of early 20th-century American financial corporations, which used architecture to project strength and stability. The original entrance hall and columned spaces are still visible today and give a sense of the ambition behind the original design.
The building stands on Oak Grove Street in the Loring Park neighborhood and is easy to approach on foot. Since it is now a residential building, the interiors are private, but the facade and entrance loggia can be viewed from the street.
In 1977, recordings for a musical project called The Loring Park Sessions were made inside the building while it was still used as office space. This happened decades before the conversion to residential use, making it an unusual chapter in the building's story.
