Efird's Department Store

Efird's Department Store is a commercial building on Main Street in Columbia, South Carolina, featuring solid brick walls and large storefront windows characteristic of early 20th-century retail design. The three-story structure with classical detailing was originally constructed around 1870 and underwent significant renovation in 1919 when the company added a third floor and applied a new brick exterior.

The brick building dates from about 1870 and was renovated and expanded in 1919, when a third story, a new brick façade and new store entrances were added. From 1919 to 1958 it housed the Columbia branch of the Charlotte-based Efird's Department Store chain. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

The building housed the Columbia branch of the Charlotte-based Efird's chain from 1919 to 1958, then became known as Lourie's Department Store. Since May 25, 2011 it has held a Mast General Store, so the retail use visitors see today continues a century-old pattern on Main Street.

The building stands on Main Street in downtown Columbia and is occupied by a Mast General Store, which opened there on May 25, 2011, so the ground floor is a working shop rather than a closed shell. Enter from the street side to see the 1919 brick façade and store entrances up close.
