Coffee High School, high school in Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama
Coffee High School is a two-story brick building with a basement located in Florence, Alabama. The structure features an auditorium accessed from the main entrance, three classroom wings surrounding a central courtyard, and decorative stonework with arched windows on its exterior.
The school opened in 1914 as Florence's first public high school and relocated several times before settling in a building on Jackson Highway in 1917. Population growth in the 1940s led to the construction of a new campus in 1951, and when Bradshaw High opened in 1966, both schools eventually merged into Florence High School in 2004.
The original school building no longer stands, but the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The location is near the University of North Alabama campus, and visitors can explore the area to see historical remnants and the nearby Braly Stadium.
The land for the original school was donated by Camilla M. Coffee, after whom the school was named. The adjacent Braly Stadium remains in use today and has hosted college football championships.
