William T. Wilkins, a merchant who invested in manufacturing enterprises, commissioned Jacob W. Cagle to construct this residence in 1876 on a 93-acre property.
The house interior displayed Victorian style elements, including crystal chandeliers and a curved staircase, representing the tastes of affluent families in post-Civil War America.
