Craighead County Courthouse
Craighead County Courthouse, Art Deco county courthouse in Jonesboro, United States
This courthouse is a brick building with limestone trim, fluted panels, and a stepped design featuring a large central block flanked by two-story side wings. The structure embodies the distinctive Art Deco style characteristic of 1930s architecture.
The building was constructed in 1934 under the Public Works Administration as the fifth courthouse on this site. It followed earlier structures destroyed by fires that resulted in the loss of county records.
The grounds hold a World War I memorial and a marker honoring Hattie Caraway, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Both commemorate important figures and events in local history.
The building sits at 511 Main Street in downtown Jonesboro and is easy to locate. It serves as the hub for county administrative work and record keeping.
The building includes fireproof storage vaults, a safety feature installed after three earlier fires. This protection was designed to prevent the loss of vital documents again.
