Terra Incognita, Public sculpture at Broadway Bridge, Portland, US
Terra Incognita is an outdoor sculpture at the Broadway Bridge made of five large cubes alternating between bundled tree trunks and stacked stones. The structure combines wood, stone, steel, and copper to create a monumental gateway at the bridge approach.
Israeli artist Ilan Averbuch created and installed this work in 1995 at the intersection of North Broadway and Larrabee Avenue. The installation marked a significant artistic addition to Portland's Rose Quarter neighborhood.
The Regional Arts and Culture Council maintains this sculpture, which incorporates elements representing both natural and constructed Portland environments within its design.
This installation sits at the base of the Broadway Bridge where it functions as a visible landmark for both pedestrians and vehicles passing through the area. Access from the public space is straightforward and offers good visibility from the street level.
Three cubes formed from tree trunks alternate with two stone-stacked cubes to establish a distinct positive-negative pattern within the composition.
