Ducros Plantation

Ducros Plantation is a house in Schriever featuring white columns and symmetrical architecture inspired by the Hermitage in Nashville. The two-story brick structure includes classical details and wide porches on both sides of the main facade.

The house was built between 1859 and 1860 after Martha Grundy inherited an estate from Colonel Van Perkins Winder. During the Civil War, the site took on strategic importance when Union General Godfrey Weitzel provided its protection.

The house displays inscribed wood panels from 1860 that document political moments of the South during that era. These details reveal the beliefs held by the family who occupied the estate as the nation moved toward division.

The estate sits on Louisiana Highway 20 and is marked as a National Register site. Visitors should note that the building remains under strict preservation guidelines that protect its original structure.

Texas Rangers raised the Bonnie Blue Flag on the mansion's roof during the Civil War. This symbol of rebellion shows the tensions present at the estate even while it enjoyed federal protection.
