Chatchie Plantation House, Plantation house east of Thibodaux, Louisiana.
Chatchie Plantation House is a 1.5-story raised frame structure with a main gallery supported by six Doric columns. The original kitchen building from 1847 was integrated into the structure and forms an important part of the property.
The building was designed and constructed in 1868 by architect Justin F. Gaude following a fire during the Civil War that destroyed the earlier structure. This reconstruction marked a new beginning for the plantation after the conflict.
The house shows building elements common to Southern architecture, with French and Creole influences visible in its design. These features reflect construction methods typical of this region during the 1800s.
The property sits east of Thibodaux along LA 308 and is easily accessible by car. Visitors should note that this is a historic private property and access may be limited.
The original 1847 kitchen survived the Civil War fire and remains visibly integrated into the later building. This makes the property a rare example where two different time periods are physically connected.
