Rienzi Plantation House, Greek Revival plantation house in Thibodaux, United States.
Rienzi Plantation House is a large mansion built in Greek Revival style that sits on the banks of Bayou Lafourche. The rectangular structure features a center hallway with balanced proportions and symmetrical architectural details throughout.
The mansion was built between 1814 and 1825, following a Spanish land grant from 1792 to Henry Schuyler Thibodaux. The property developed into an important plantation during the early growth of this region in Louisiana.
The plantation produced 950 hogsheads of sugar in 1859, representing the agricultural development and economic structure of antebellum Louisiana.
The property sits directly across from downtown Thibodaux along Bayou Lafourche at 215 East Bayou Road. The grounds feature large live oak trees that provide shade and are part of the registered landscape.
In 1887 one of the Knights of Labor's first major strikes took place on these grounds. The event escalated into a confrontation that resulted in deaths and marked a turning point in regional labor history.
