Waherak Maihar, Historic outrigger canoe in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.
Waherak Maihar is a traditional wooden outrigger canoe now stored at Saipan's public works facility for preservation and viewing. The vessel was built from natural materials and displays the classic design features typical of Pacific Island watercraft used for ocean travel.
This vessel was built in 1958 and officially recognized when added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The listing marked its importance as a surviving example of maritime heritage from the Caroline Islands.
This outrigger canoe reflects the boat-building traditions passed down through generations of skilled seafarers in the region. The construction methods visible here show how people understood the ocean and their relationship to it through practical craftsmanship.
The vessel is accessible at Saipan's public works compound where you can view the construction techniques up close. It helps to check opening hours in advance, as this is an administrative facility rather than a dedicated museum space.
This canoe was donated by people from Poluwat Island for the 1976 Operation Sail celebration marking America's Bicentennial. The donation represents a direct gift from Pacific Island communities to a major American commemorative event.
