Woodlark Building, Historic commercial building in downtown Portland, United States
The Woodlark Building is a nine-story office structure with Beaux-Arts ornamentation located at the corner of Southwest Alder Street and 9th Avenue. The structure now contains a hotel and retail spaces across its lower floors.
The building was constructed in 1911-1912 and initially served as headquarters for pharmaceutical companies Woodard, Clarke & Company and Clarke-Woodward Company until 1924. A major renovation in 2018 merged it with the adjacent Cornelius Hotel to create a hotel operation.
The building displays design features typical of early 20th-century commercial districts, with ornamental details that reflect American business architecture of that time. Ground-level spaces show how retail and services were woven into office buildings as part of daily urban life.
The building sits at a central intersection downtown and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors can explore the lobby and dining areas on the lower floors or stay in the hotel rooms above.
The ground floors housed multiple shops over the decades, including a drugstore, the Sherman Clay piano store, and various restaurants today. These changing retail spaces show how urban buildings adapt to different community needs through the generations.
