Early settlers named this geographical formation after its silhouette, which reminded them of the industrial profile of the Provo woolen mill.
The Bureau of Land Management preserves two endangered cacti species near Factory Butte while maintaining designated areas for off-road vehicle recreation.
Located 12 miles northwest of Hanksville, visitors can access Factory Butte through State Route 24 and explore the nearby Moonscape Overlook.
The surrounding landscape contains unusual geological formations including Dark Spire and Swing Arm City, formed by resistant Emery sandstone over Mancos Shale.
