Golden Throne, Mountain summit in Capitol Reef National Park, United States.
Golden Throne is a mountain summit in Capitol Reef National Park rising to about 7,042 feet (2,146 meters). The peak consists of Navajo Sandstone that displays a distinctive gold-tinted coloration due to an overlying layer of Carmel Formation deposits.
Native peoples inhabited the area and left rock art on nearby surfaces marking their presence. The mountain was later recognized by European settlers and eventually became part of the protected national park lands.
The summit takes its name from its throne-like appearance when viewed from certain angles. Visitors come year-round to photograph and experience this distinctive natural shape.
A hiking trail about 3 kilometers long leads to viewpoints at the summit and provides close views of the rock formations. The route is best visited during cooler months and requires sturdy footwear due to uneven terrain.
The golden-yellow coloring of this peak sets it apart from the red and white sandstone formations nearby. This unusual tint results from specific mineral deposits and makes the mountain visibly distinct from a distance.
