Glen House, resort in New Hampshire, United States
Glen House is a resort at the base of Mount Washington in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, with 68 rooms in a building that mimics the historic mountain hotels of the 1800s. More than half the rooms have balconies facing the Great Gulf or the Carter-Moriah Range, and the resort offers a restaurant, bar, heated saltwater indoor pool, and meeting and fitness spaces.
John Bellows opened the original Glen House in 1852 on a former farm after the Grand Trunk Railway improved access to the area in 1851. The building was rebuilt after fires in 1884 and 1893, until the property finally closed in the early 20th century.
The resort reflects how visitors have come to this mountain area for rest and outdoor adventure since the 1800s. Its design echoes the grand hotels of that era while serving today's travelers seeking similar mountain experiences.
The resort sits right next to the Mount Washington Auto Road and Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, making it easy for visitors to access hiking and mountain activities. With its saltwater pool, fitness center, and family-friendly restaurant, guests can combine outdoor pursuits with comfortable amenities.
The current building uses a geothermal system for heating and cooling with planned projects for hydro and solar power, making it one of the more sustainable hotels in the region. The resort was built mainly by local New Hampshire firms, showing commitment to regional craftsmanship alongside modern environmental goals.
