Canal House

The Canal House is a two-story stone building in Connersville featuring Greek Revival columns and a triangular pediment on its front facade. The structure sits on a modest plot and displays the typical design of 19th-century administrative buildings.

The building was constructed in 1842 by the Whitewater Valley Canal Company to serve as administrative headquarters and living quarters for canal management. It records the growth of water-based transportation in Indiana during that era.

The structure represents the development of water transportation infrastructure in Indiana during the mid-nineteenth century through its architectural and functional design.

The building is today accessible to visitors on a quiet street in Connersville and functions as a local history resource. You can view it from the outside and gain insight into the area's water transportation heritage.

Congressman Finly Hutchinson Gray and his wife initiated restoration work during their residence from 1936 to 1947, before the building became a Veterans center.
