Built in 1884 as a wedding gift from state senator Tobias Mealey to his daughter Susan and Rufus Rand, the vice president of Minneapolis Gas Light Company.
The residence represents the architectural preferences of wealthy Minneapolis businessmen who constructed summer estates outside the city during the late 19th century.
The house includes large windows for summer ventilation and exterior shutters for winter insulation, demonstrating practical design elements for Minnesota's seasonal changes.
