Jewett House, University dormitory at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, US
Jewett House is a nine-story dormitory on the Vassar College campus in Poughkeepsie built in the Tudor style. The U-shaped brick structure features limestone entrances, terracotta ornaments, and a copper roof.
Built in 1907 as North Residence, the building was renamed Jewett House in 1915 to honor Milo P. Jewett, the first president of Vassar College. The name change reflected the institution's recognition of its founding leader.
The residence hall brings together students from different years who share living spaces and participate in communal campus events. This daily interaction shapes the social bonds and community life within the building.
The dormitory accommodates approximately 195 students in various room types throughout the building. Visitors should be aware that this is an active residential space and access to private areas may be restricted.
The eight-story rear tower contains a water tank holding about 113,000 liters that was designed to regulate water pressure across the entire campus. This hidden engineering system demonstrates early 1900s construction techniques.
