Poughkeepsie

Poughkeepsie is a town in Dutchess County that spreads along the Hudson River, forming a mosaic of residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and civic institutions. The town contains buildings from many different eras, from Victorian houses to modern structures, reflecting growth and change across several centuries.

The town began in 1686 when English and Dutch settlers purchased land from the Wappinger people, whose language gave it its name. Early settlement grew into a significant Hudson Valley location with port activity, and later became an important railroad hub.

The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park contains one of the longest elevated pedestrian bridges, offering visitors an unusual vantage point over the river and surrounding landscape. The bridge was originally built for railroad use and was later converted into a popular walking route.
