Edgemar, Mixed-use art center in Main Street, Santa Monica, US
Edgemar is an art center on Main Street in Santa Monica, combining renovated warehouses, an Art Deco office building, and modern structures designed by architect Frank Gehry in 1988. The complex houses art galleries, retail spaces, offices, and event venues distributed across multiple levels and connected by open walkways.
The site started in 1908 as a warehouse for the Imperial Ice Company and was later used by the Santa Monica Dairy Company. In 1988, the entire property was redesigned into a modern art complex.
The space became a hub for artists and galleries when it opened, drawing creative professionals to this Main Street location. Today, visitors encounter artworks and artistic activity throughout the complex's various spaces.
The center is easy to access and features open areas where you can walk freely without needing special admission. It helps to set aside time for gallery visits or events depending on what interests you.
Since 1995, a holiday installation made from shopping carts has been displayed each year, designed by artist Anthony Schmitt. This seasonal creation has become a special local tradition that draws visitors specifically during this time.
