Swallow Cliff, Outdoor fitness trail and nature preserve in Cook County, Illinois.
Swallow Cliff is an outdoor fitness trail and nature preserve in Cook County with a limestone bluff rising about 100 feet. The site features two sets of stairs totaling roughly 290 steps and several unpaved trails winding through forest.
The Civilian Conservation Corps built the original stone steps in 1930 to create a recreation area within Cook County's Forest Preserves. The site has remained an important local outdoor space since that period.
The site attracts bird watchers, especially during migration season when raptors circle along the cliff. Visitors gather to observe natural behaviors and learn more about the local wildlife.
The site has two entrances: one from Calumet Sag Road on the north side and one from La Grange Road on the south side, with parking available at both locations. Keep in mind that unpaved trails can become muddy during wet weather.
During winter months, the stone steps transform into a natural sledding hill, creating a completely different use of the space. This seasonal shift makes the site a versatile destination for people seeking different activities.
