Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, Nature conservation center in Baton Rouge, United States.
Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is a protected area spanning about 103 acres with diverse habitats including cypress-tupelo swamps, beech-magnolia forests, and hardwood forests. These zones are connected by gravel paths and wooden boardwalks that allow visitors to explore the natural environment at their own pace.
The nature center was established in May 1997 by the Recreation and Park Commission for East Baton Rouge Parish as their first conservation project. It was created to protect the local swamp and forest ecosystems for future generations.
The main building houses a substantial collection of vintage Louisiana duck decoys donated by Charles W. Frank Jr., reflecting traditional regional craftsmanship. These carved figures tell the story of the area's hunting heritage and folk art traditions.
The center welcomes visitors Tuesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from noon to 5 PM, with seasonal conditions affecting trail comfort. The pathways are accessible for most visitors since they are well-maintained and easy to navigate.
The Louisiana Bird Observatory has conducted research at the site since 2010, tracking population trends and molting patterns of southern bird species. This ongoing scientific work makes it an active research hub gathering important data on bird biology.
