Mike the Tiger Habitat, Tiger habitat at Louisiana State University campus, United States.
Mike the Tiger Habitat is a spacious enclosure on the Louisiana State University campus designed with natural vegetation, climbing structures, a waterfall, and a swimming pool. The facility provides the Bengal tiger with room for natural movement and activities throughout the day.
The first Mike arrived at the university in 1936 from the Little Rock Zoo, starting an uncommon tradition of a live tiger mascot on campus. Over the decades, multiple tigers have carried the same name, each becoming part of the university's evolving history.
Mike the Tiger serves as Louisiana State University's official mascot, embodying the university's identity and tradition among students, alumni, and visitors. The habitat reflects how the institution has evolved its relationship with the animal, balancing legacy with contemporary animal care standards.
The habitat sits between Bernie Moore Track Stadium and Pete Maravich Assembly Center, making it easy to locate on campus. Visitors can walk by and observe the tiger daily when the university grounds are accessible and weather permits the animal's activity.
This is the only residence of a live tiger on a college campus in the United States, where the resident receives specialized veterinary care. The facility also runs educational programs that help visitors learn about tiger biology and conservation efforts.
