Ravenna, Residential neighborhood in northeastern Seattle, United States.
Ravenna is a residential neighborhood in northeastern Seattle, lying between Green Lake to the north and University Village to the south. Its streets are lined with older trees and single-family homes, with Ravenna Park running through a wooded ravine at its center.
The area was home to the Duwamish people before settlers arrived in the late 1800s and named it after the Italian city of Ravenna, drawn by a resemblance they saw in the dense forests. It was incorporated as its own town in 1906 and annexed by Seattle just one year later.
Third Place Books, an independent bookstore on 65th Street, draws people in for readings, community events, and casual browsing throughout the week. The store gives the neighborhood a social center that feels very different from a typical shopping strip.
The 25th Avenue NE is the main road through the neighborhood and connects easily to the University District and downtown Seattle. Several bus lines run along the main streets, and marked bike routes make getting around without a car straightforward.
Every December, a stretch of NE 83rd Street transforms into what locals call Candy Cane Lane, with coordinated holiday light displays that residents have kept up since 1951. The tradition started as a neighborly agreement and has continued across several generations without any formal organization.
