Ravenna Park

Ravenna Park, Urban park in University District, Seattle, US

Description

Ravenna Park is an urban green space spanning about 50 acres through a wooded ravine system with trails winding beneath tall Douglas Fir and Western Redcedar trees. The grounds feature tennis courts, basketball areas, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, wading pools, and play areas for children.

History

The park was purchased by the city in 1911 and temporarily renamed Roosevelt Park in the 1920s following the direction of residents at that time. Local community members later requested the original name be restored, which happened in the 1930s.

Culture

The park serves as a gathering place where Seattle residents come to exercise, spend time outdoors, and enjoy nature in their neighborhood. Families and individuals use the open spaces regularly for recreation and relaxation throughout the week.

Practical

The park is easily accessible with multiple entry points and offers free activities for all ages throughout the year. Wear sturdy shoes if you plan to walk the forest trails, especially after rainy weather when paths can be muddy.

Did you know?

The ravine drops more than 100 feet below ground at its deepest point, creating a hidden natural landscape within the city. A notable feature is Ravenna Creek, which was brought back to daylight in 2006 after decades of flowing through underground storm drains, restoring a natural waterway to the park.
