Cape Romano Dome House, Residential structure near Cape Romano, United States.
The Cape Romano Dome House is a cluster of connected concrete domes set in the Gulf of Mexico off Collier County. The structure stands on stilts and includes six rounded units with living and sleeping spaces now partially surrounded by water.
Bob Lee built the residence in 1982 on Morgan Island following years of planning and land acquisition. Erosion and hurricanes gradually moved the domes farther into the sea over decades until Hurricane Ian submerged them completely in 2022.
The unusual dome design became a reference point for Florida coastal architecture, drawing attention from photographers and marine life observers through decades.
The remains lie in open water and can only be reached by boat since there is no bridge or land connection. Waves and tides affect visibility of the domes depending on weather and water levels.
The building was constructed on sand without transport roads and used material from the site for the dome walls. Today the collapsed domes form a reef on the seabed that shelters fish and other marine life.
