Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Collier County, Florida.
This 35,000-acre refuge encompasses North America's largest mangrove forest, brackish marshes, coastal hammocks, and interconnected waterways in Southwest Florida.
The Department of Interior established the refuge in 1996 through the Arizona-Florida Land Exchange Act, trading 68 acres in Phoenix for 108,000 acres in Florida.
Native American populations constructed shell midden complexes on islands within the area, while early settlers focused on commercial fishing until the 1940s.
Visitors access the refuge via the Marsh Trail, which features an 18-space parking lot, a two-story observation tower, and paths for hiking and biking.
The refuge protects multiple endangered species, including Florida manatees, wood storks, and three species of sea turtles that nest on its beaches.
