Bank of Everglades Building
Bank of Everglades Building, Neoclassical bank building in Everglades City, Florida.
The Bank of Everglades Building is a Neoclassical bank structure located at 201 West Broadway in Everglades City. It features symmetrical facades, prominent columns, and carefully balanced proportions typical of early twentieth-century financial architecture.
Magnate Barron Collier hired architect William O. Sparklin to design this institution in 1927 as a major financial center for the region. It served as the primary bank for Collier County until 1962, marking a significant period of commercial growth in southwest Florida.
This structure shows how banking moved into rural Florida communities during the early twentieth century and became central to local economic life. It reflects the hopes of small-town residents who wanted modern financial services in their region.
The building is accessible to view from the street, with its architectural details clearly visible from outside. Restoration work by the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation may be ongoing, so visitors should check the current condition before planning a visit.
In 2018, Florida Preservationist Magazine listed this structure among the top 11 buildings most needing restoration in the entire state. This recognition helped draw attention and resources to its preservation efforts.
