Palm Cottage, Historic house in Naples, Florida.
Palm Cottage is a historic house in Naples, Florida, built in 1895 using tabby mortar, a local building material made from sand, shells, water, and limestone. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest surviving structures in the city.
The house was built in 1895 by Walter N. Haldeman, owner of the Louisville Courier Journal, and was the first residential building constructed in Naples. This made it the starting point of the town's settlement in southwest Florida.
The rooms inside show how wealthy families lived in the early 1900s through original furniture and household items from that time. Walking through the spaces gives you a sense of daily life from that era.
The house is managed by the Naples Historical Society and is open for guided tours, so it is worth checking opening times before your visit. The outdoor gardens can be explored on foot, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.
The grounds feature five separate garden areas, each planted with native species from a different natural habitat found in Florida. A visit here covers both the house and a range of local plants that you would not typically see together in one place.
