Matanzas Pass Bridge, Road bridge in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
Matanzas Pass Bridge is a road bridge in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, linking Estero Island to the mainland over the tidal channel known as Matanzas Pass. It carries two traffic lanes and a separate pedestrian path lined with concrete barriers on both sides.
The first crossing here opened in 1921 as a wooden drawbridge, charging a toll of 54 cents and giving Estero Island its first road link to the mainland. The structure was later rebuilt and widened as the area grew and traffic increased over the following decades.
For the people who live on Estero Island, this bridge is the only road connection to the mainland, making it part of daily life in a very direct way. Crossing it, you notice how the landscape shifts from suburban streets to open water and beach storefronts.
Pedestrians can cross on a dedicated path separated from car traffic, making the walk safe and straightforward. Vehicle traffic can slow significantly on weekends and during the warmer months, since this bridge is the only road on and off the island.
On either side of the bridge, there are fishing piers where anglers can cast directly into the channel while boats pass below them. This makes the spot one of the few places where road traffic, foot traffic, and recreational fishing all share the same structure at once.
