Sanibel Causeway, Road bridge connecting mainland Florida to Sanibel Island, United States.
Sanibel Causeway is a road bridge connecting mainland Florida to Sanibel Island in the United States, extending nearly 3 miles across San Carlos Bay. The structure consists of three two-lane bridge spans with two artificial islands positioned between them.
The original connection opened in 1963, replacing a ferry that had operated since the early twentieth century. Between 2004 and 2007, the entire structure was rebuilt and replaced with the current design.
The name comes from the island it serves, which lies at the end of the artificial road connection. Anglers and birdwatchers use the two artificial islands along the route as starting points for their activities in the shallow water.
Vehicles must pay a toll collected at three lanes on the mainland shore. The two artificial islands provide parking areas and water access, allowing visitors to stop before reaching the island.
Sections of the old bridges were intentionally sunk in shallow water after demolition. These concrete remnants now form artificial reefs where fish and other marine life gather.
