Hawthorne Place, historic house in Natchez, Mississippi, USA

Hawthorne Place is a Federal-style house in Natchez, Mississippi, built around 1825 to 1827. The structure features a simple rectangular form with a centered front door, six-over-six sash windows, a low-pitched gabled roof, and brick-nogged frame construction with one and a half stories.

The house was built for Maria Overaker and her mother Margaret following the division of the Overaker family estate after George Overaker's death in 1820. Its brick-nogged frame construction technique is rare, with only two other known surviving examples in the area.

The name Hawthorne Place reflects the early American families who settled here. The house reveals daily life through preserved details like the staircase ornaments and original hardware from the 1820s.

The house is accessible via a gravel drive approaching from the west and stands on a low brick foundation. Visitors can observe the exterior details including the front porch with wooden columns and the preserved outbuildings such as a barn and carriage house on the property.

A stenciled hexagonal floor pattern still exists in a closet under the stairs. This painted surface from the early 1800s offers a glimpse into the decorative craftsmanship and aesthetic choices of that era.
