The Macon Historic District spans 688 acres with 1,207 contributing resources, including residential, commercial, educational, and governmental structures from different periods.
When General Sherman conducted his march through Georgia in 1864, he bypassed Macon, allowing the preservation of numerous antebellum Greek Revival buildings.
The district houses Wesleyan College, which became the first institution worldwide to grant degrees to women in 1836, establishing a strong educational legacy.
The National Register listing provides property owners access to tax incentives for rehabilitation projects through the Historic Macon Foundation's consultation services.
Within the district, Cherokee Brick and Tile Company continues its operations since the early 1900s, producing 130 million bricks annually using traditional methods.
