Macon is a consolidated city and the administrative center of Bibb County, sitting along the Ocmulgee River in central Georgia where gentle hills meet flat plains. The settlement covers roughly 145 square kilometers at an elevation of about 116 meters.
The settlement grew around Fort Benjamin Hawkins in 1809 and received its official city charter as the seat of Bibb County in 1823. The name honors North Carolina politician Nathaniel Macon.
