Devils Tower National Monument, National monument in Crook County, United States.

Devils Tower is a massive columnar rock formation rising about 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding landscape and the Belle Fourche River below. The structure displays distinctive hexagonal columns of igneous rock that were formed through ancient magmatic processes deep underground.

President Theodore Roosevelt designated this as the first national monument in the United States in 1906, protecting the area under federal management. This designation established an important precedent for how the nation would conserve and manage remarkable natural sites.

The formation holds deep spiritual meaning for several Native American tribes, who gather here for ceremonies and prayers throughout the year.

The site is easy to explore on foot with several hiking paths available, and a paved trail circles the base for easier access. Plan your visit for spring or fall when temperatures are moderate and crowds tend to be smaller.

The first recorded ascent to the summit happened in 1893 when two local ranchers built a wooden ladder to reach the top. This early climb remains a noteworthy part of the site's history and demonstrates the resourcefulness of early explorers.
