Devils Tower National Monument
Devils Tower National Monument, National monument in Crook County, United States.
The monolithic igneous rock formation rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, displaying vertical columns of phonolite porphyry formed through magmatic intrusion.
President Theodore Roosevelt designated Devils Tower as the first national monument in the United States on September 24, 1906, protecting 1,347 acres of land.
Native American tribes refer to the formation as Bears Lodge, considering it a sacred location for traditional ceremonies, prayers, and spiritual gatherings.
The monument includes 8 miles of hiking trails, with the Tower Trail offering a 1.3-mile paved path encircling the base of Devils Tower.
The first recorded climb occurred in 1893 when local ranchers William Rogers and Willard Ripley constructed a wooden ladder to reach the summit.
