San Diego Trust and Savings Bank Building, historic bank building in San Diego, California

The San Diego Trust and Savings Bank Building is a historic bank structure from the late 1920s located at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Broadway. It features sturdy stonework and large windows that flood the interior with natural light, revealing high ceilings and original architectural details from its banking era.

The bank was founded in 1889 as San Diego Savings Bank and renamed San Diego Trust and Savings Bank in 1925 to signal growth and expanded ambitions. The current building was designed by architect William Templeton Johnston and completed in 1928 after construction began in 1927.

The building's name reflects an institution that symbolized financial trust for San Diego residents over many decades. It served as a gathering place where neighbors conducted business and built relationships within the community.

The building is centrally located in downtown San Diego and easily accessible on foot from the main streets and transit routes. Today it functions as a hotel while preserving its historic exterior and select interior spaces for visitors to experience.

From 1928 to 1933, a revolving aerial beacon crowned the building, making it visible from far away and lighting the sky at night. This distinctive feature made it a standout landmark that residents and visitors could easily recognize across the city.
