Hodgson-Aid Mill

Hodgson-Aid Mill is a three-and-a-half-story timber frame building with red weatherboards situated along Bryant Creek near Sycamore in Missouri. The structure incorporated modern milling equipment such as roller mills and steel water turbines to produce high-quality patent flour for regional markets.

The current mill was built in 1897, replacing an earlier structure constructed by William Holeman in 1861. The original facility had ceased operations during the Civil War years.

The mill functioned as a meeting place where farmers gathered to grind grain and exchange news with neighbors. Beyond milling, the site hosted a general store and post office, making it a hub of community activity.

The mill is located in a rural setting along a creek, so wear appropriate footwear for unpaved paths when visiting. The location allows you to observe how the flowing water powered the entire operation.

A limestone barrel vault at the base of a cliff captures water from Hodgson Spring to power the mill's machinery. This constant water source allowed the operation to function reliably throughout the year.
