Dick Dowling, Marble monument in Hermann Park, Houston, United States.
The Dick Dowling statue is a marble monument in Houston depicting Richard W. Dowling and commemorating the Battle of Sabine Pass. The pedestal bears the names of soldiers who participated in this historical engagement.
Sculptor Frank Teich created this monument in 1905 as the city's first publicly funded statue of its kind. The work was relocated from its original location to Hermann Park in 1958, where it remained for decades.
The monument represents changing perspectives on Confederate memorials in public spaces, leading to its removal during social movements in 2020.
The monument is not currently on public display at its traditional location. Interested visitors should check with local authorities or cultural institutions to learn about its current status and accessibility.
The statue became a target of a bombing attempt when law enforcement arrested a college student carrying explosives in 2017. This incident illustrates the heated public debate surrounding such monuments.
