Bash Tapia Castle

The fortification features stone walls positioned along the western bank of the Tigris River, forming a strategic section of Mosul's ancient city defenses.

Built in the 12th century as one of seven fortresses protecting Mosul, the castle sustained damage from Timur's forces in 1393 before Ottoman reconstruction.

The castle represents medieval Islamic military architecture and served as a central defensive position during the Ottoman-Persian conflicts of the 18th century.

The castle remains display evidence of multiple construction phases, with different sections revealing techniques from both medieval Islamic and Ottoman periods.

Despite extensive damage during recent conflicts, including partial destruction in 2015, sections of the original medieval stonework continue to stand.
