Universiti Malaya, Research university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Universiti Malaya is a research university in southwest Kuala Lumpur with teaching buildings, libraries, and laboratories across a large campus. The grounds cover several streets and hills with green spaces, dormitories, and sports fields in between.
The university was founded in 1934 when two older educational institutions merged and formed a central place for higher learning. After independence it grew into the leading institution of the country and attracted students from across the region.
The name comes from the Malay Peninsula and connects the institution to the region and its past. Visitors can walk through outdoor areas and see students studying under tropical trees or gathering in open courtyards between lectures.
The campus is located about 3 miles (5 kilometers) southwest of the city center and can be reached by public transport or car. Some areas are open to visitors, but it is worth checking in advance if special events or open days are taking place.
The institution runs a platform for academic publications that is freely accessible and offers research results without a paywall. This initiative allows anyone with an internet connection to read and use current research work directly.
