Serian Division, Administrative division in Sarawak, Malaysia.
Serian Division is an administrative division in Sarawak, on the island of Borneo in Malaysia, made up of three districts: Serian, Tebedu, and Simunjan. The area is covered with hilly terrain, river networks, and patches of forest, with Serian town serving as the main administrative center.
Serian Division was created in 2015 when it was separated from Samarahan Division, making it the twelfth administrative division of Sarawak. Before that, the area had long been governed as part of the larger Samarahan region.
The local market in Serian town is a place where Bidayuh, Iban, Chinese, and Malay communities meet and trade side by side. You can see this mix in the foods, languages, and goods on display on any given morning.
Visiting during the dry season makes travel easier, as roads in the hilly parts of the division can become difficult in wet weather. Those heading to more remote areas should be prepared for rough tracks and limited connectivity.
Tebedu, in the south of the division, hosts one of the few land border crossings between Malaysia and Indonesia, used daily by traders and local residents from both sides. The small town around the crossing has its own rhythm shaped entirely by this back-and-forth flow of people and goods.
