Atkinson Clock Tower, Historic clock tower in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
The Atkinson Clock Tower is a wooden clock tower located on Signal Hill Road in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The structure stands about 50 feet (15 meters) tall and features a two-faced clock mechanism with white-painted wooden walls.
The structure was built in 1905 to honor Francis George Atkinson, the first District Officer of Jesselton who died of malaria in 1902. It survived military attacks during the Second World War and has been maintained since then.
The structure displays British colonial building styles and stands as the oldest remaining building in Kota Kinabalu. Local people gather nearby and use it as a landmark to navigate through the city.
The tower sits on a hill with good visibility of the surroundings and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since access involves climbing stairs and the surrounding terrain is sloped.
The wooden structure bears visible bullet holes and shrapnel marks on its walls from wartime attacks. These marks tell the story of the bombing that struck the city during the Second World War.
