Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum, Heritage jewelry museum in Melaka Tengah, Malaysia.
The Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum is a heritage building in central Melaka that houses more than 400 pieces of traditional ornaments made by Chinese, Indian, and Sri Lankan craftsmen. The collections span two floors and show the jewelry and metalwork created for the Peranakan community.
The building was once the home of a prominent Peranakan family and opened as a museum in 2012. The conversion preserves the architectural history of the house while now displaying the craftsmanship connected to its former residents.
The collections display jewelry and ornaments that reflect how the Peranakan community expressed their identity through craftsmanship and aesthetic choices. Walking through the rooms, you see the objects they valued in their daily lives and special occasions.
The museum is open daily to visitors with two floors of displays that are easy to navigate through. You have plenty of time to look at the objects without feeling rushed, and the rooms are laid out in a logical way.
Beyond the jewelry pieces, the museum displays original tools and equipment that craftsmen used in their work. These practical objects offer a rare look at the daily labor behind the beautiful ornaments on display.
