Inca road system

The Qhapaq Ñan extends more than 40,000 kilometers through six countries, featuring stone-paved paths, suspension bridges, and mountain tunnels.

Pre-Columbian civilizations constructed this network between 1438 and 1533, connecting territories from Ecuador in the north to Chile in the south.

The road system enabled the transfer of products, knowledge, and traditions between different ecological zones and communities throughout the Inca Empire.

Regular rest stations, called tambos, positioned every 20 to 30 kilometers along the routes provided shelter and supplies for travelers.

The Inca engineers built this extensive network without the use of wheeled vehicles, iron tools, or large domesticated animals.
