Chanavayita, Coastal village in Iquique, Chile.
Chanavayita is a coastal village about 59 km south of Iquique along Route 1. The settlement has a fishing harbor set in turquoise waters and provides essential services including a health post, fire station, and school.
The region was inhabited by the Changa indigenous people who settled along the coast in pre-Columbian times. The modern settlement developed as a fishing community and later gained religious institutions, with a parish officially recognized in recent decades.
The community's identity centers on fishing and traditional use of marine resources. Residents move to the rhythm of daily harbor life, where boats depart in the morning and return with catches in the afternoon.
The village is easily accessible by Route 1 and has basic infrastructure for day visits. Keep in mind it is a small settlement, so checking ahead on services and opening hours of any facilities is wise.
The village attracts more visitors and temporary residents during summer months as the warm beach becomes more appealing. These seasonal shifts shape community life and create two distinct rhythms throughout the year.
