Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Museum of contemporary art on Saadiyat Island, United Arab Emirates.
This museum designed by Frank Gehry will span 42,000 square meters and feature interconnected galleries of varying heights arranged around a central courtyard with natural lighting and ventilation systems adapted to the desert climate.
The project was announced in 2006 through an agreement between Abu Dhabi's government and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, with construction beginning in 2011 but facing multiple delays before resuming with a scheduled opening in 2026.
The museum will showcase modern and contemporary artworks with a focus on pieces from West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia, while serving as an educational center promoting dialogue between regional and global artistic movements.
The complex includes exhibition spaces covering 12,000 square meters, conservation labs, archives, a library, educational facilities, and centers dedicated to Arab and Islamic art and technology research.
The design incorporates traditional Middle Eastern architectural elements such as wind towers and courtyards to reduce energy consumption while featuring Gehry's signature deconstructivist style with curvilinear forms inspired by the desert landscape and coastal surroundings.
